The U.S. government is reporting that privately‐owned housing starts in March were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1,216,000, which is 22.3% below February’s revised number. However, it was still 1.4% higher than one year ago. March’s rate for units in buildings with five units or more was 347k. Privately‐owned housing units authorized by building permits in March were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1,353,000, which was 6.8% below February’s revised number, However it was 5% higher than one year ago. Authorizations of units in buildings with five units or more were at a rate of 423,000 in February.
“Due to recent events surrounding COVID‐19, many governments and businesses are operating on a limited capacity or have ceased operations completely. The Census Bureau has monitored response and data quality and determined estimates in this release meet publication standards.”
