Oh what a difference a month can make. The U.S. government is reporting that privately‐owned housing starts in April were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1,569,000, which is 9.5% lower than March’s revised number. However, this figure is 67.3% higher than one year ago. April’s rate for units in buildings with five units or more was 470k. Privately‐owned housing units authorized by building permits in April were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1,760,000, which was 0.3% higher than March’s revised number. Authorizations of units in buildings with five units or more were at a rate of 559k in April.
