The U.S. government is reporting that privately‐owned housing starts in March were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1,139,000. This is 0.3% below February’s revised estimate and 14.2% lower than March, 2018. Single‐family housing starts in March were at a rate of 785k, which is 0.4% below February’s revised figure. March’s rate for units in buildings with five units or more was 337k. Privately‐owned housing units authorized by building permits in March were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1,269,000. This is 1.7% lower than February’s revised rate and is 7.8% below the March, 2018. Single‐family authorizations in March were at a rate of 808,000, which is 1.1% below February’s revised figure. Authorizations of units in buildings with five units or more were at a rate of 425k in March.
