The U.S. government is reporting that privately‐owned housing starts in April were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1,401,000, which is 2.2% higher than March’s revised number and is 22.3% lower than one year ago. April’s rate for units in buildings with five units or more was 542k. Privately‐owned housing units authorized by building permits in April were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1,416,000, which is 1.5% below March’s revised number. Authorizations of units in buildings with five units or more were at a rate of 502k in April.
