According to a new report from the Pew Research Center, the total number of rental households in the U.S. has reached a record high of 36.6%; a 50-year high. Data also shows that the total number of U.S. households grew by 7.6 million between 2006 and 2016, but remained flat over the same period. This was due in part to lingering effects of the housing crisis.
The increase in U.S. renters over the past decade does not necessarily mean that homeownership is undesirable to today’s renters. Indeed, in a 2016 Pew Research Center survey, 72% of renters said they would like to buy a house at some point.
